PNG is the right choice when an image has sharp edges, text, or transparency: logos, icons, UI screenshots, technical diagrams. JPG is the right choice when an image is a natural photograph: people, landscapes, products, food.

JPG does not support transparency. Any transparent pixels in the original PNG become white (or a colour you pick) in the JPG output. If transparency matters for the image — for example, a logo with a transparent background — switch to WebP instead, or keep the PNG.
JPG also uses lossy compression. At very low quality settings (below 60), you may see blocky compression artefacts in flat-coloured areas. At the default 85 setting, you should not be able to tell the JPG and PNG apart on a typical screen.

Transparent pixels are flattened against a white background by default. If you want a different background colour, fill the PNG with that colour in any image editor before conversion.
