Add Watermark to PDF Online — Free PDF Watermark Tool

Adding a watermark to a PDF protects your document and signals ownership. Whether you are sharing a draft and want to mark it CONFIDENTIAL, branding client deliverables with a logo, or stamping internal documents with a project codename, the Add Watermark to PDF tool stamps text or image watermarks across every page of your PDF in seconds.

It is free, fully browser-based, and applies no extra watermark of its own. Choose your text or upload an image, position it on the page, set opacity and rotation, and download the watermarked PDF.

Why use this tool

Watermarking a PDF should be quick, customisable, and produce a clean result. Here is what makes this tool useful:

  • Text and image watermarks

Stamp any text you type, or upload a PNG/JPG logo. Both can be applied to all pages of the PDF in a single operation.

  • Position, opacity, rotation

Place the watermark anywhere on the page — corner, centre, diagonal — and pick its opacity and rotation for the right visual weight.

  • Lossless underlying PDF

Watermarks are layered on top of existing pages without re-rendering text or images. Your PDF content remains crisp and selectable.

  • Browser-only privacy

Watermarking runs locally using pdf-lib. Your PDF — even draft contracts and confidential reports — never leaves your device.

  • Free with no extra watermark

The tool does not stamp its own logo on your output. Your watermark is the only thing on the PDF.

  • Works on mobile

Watermark PDFs on your phone or tablet in any modern browser, with no plugin or app required.

How It Works

Adding a watermark is four steps. Each happens inside your browser.

  1. 1

    Upload your PDF

Drop the PDF you want to watermark into the tool, or browse for it. The source file is not modified.

  2. 2

    Choose text or image

Type the watermark text (for example, CONFIDENTIAL or DRAFT), or upload a PNG/JPG image to use as the watermark.

  3. 3

    Set position, opacity, rotation

Pick where the watermark sits on the page, how transparent it is, and at what angle. Live preview shows the result.

  4. 4

    Apply and download

Click Apply and the watermark is stamped onto every page. Download the watermarked PDF in a single click.

Why and when to watermark a PDF

Watermarking is a soft form of document control. It does not encrypt or restrict access, but it makes the status of the document visually obvious to anyone looking at it. A DRAFT watermark tells a reader the document is not final. A CONFIDENTIAL watermark warns that distribution is limited. A faint company logo across every page signals authorship.

Watermarks are also useful for tracing leaks: a small recipient identifier — initials, email, or client name — stamped on each copy makes it possible to identify the source if the PDF is later shared without permission.

How the watermark tool works under the hood

pdf-lib opens the source PDF and exposes each page for drawing. For text watermarks, the tool embeds a standard font, calculates centre positioning based on page dimensions, applies opacity and rotation, and draws the text on top of existing content. For image watermarks, the uploaded PNG or JPG is embedded as a PDF image XObject and placed at the chosen position with the chosen scale.

Because the original page content is left untouched and the watermark is layered on top, the underlying PDF text remains fully selectable, and any embedded images keep their original quality.

Tips for clean watermarks

Use a low opacity (15–30 percent) for diagonal full-page text watermarks so they do not interfere with reading the document.

Use a higher opacity (60–90 percent) for small corner logos that should be clearly visible without obscuring text.

Diagonal text at 45 degrees across the centre of the page is the most universally recognisable watermark style — use it for DRAFT and CONFIDENTIAL.

If you are stamping a logo, prepare the image with a transparent background (PNG) so the watermark blends cleanly with the underlying PDF content.

Privacy when watermarking PDFs

Watermarked documents are often the most sensitive ones — drafts of contracts, internal strategy documents, client deliverables. iLoveeIMG handles watermarking entirely in the browser. The PDF and any watermark image you upload never leave your device.

Closing the tab discards everything from memory, and no log of the operation is kept anywhere.
